Local cocoa processing for the Virunga Foundation

Clean technology drives economic development in challenging environments:

  • worlds's first chocolate factory run 100% on renewable energy

  • custom-built cocoa roaster with a capacity of 15 tons/month

  • implementation of electrical and mechanical automation system

  • local economy is strengthened with local cocoa processing and direct export

A local chocolate factory that provides employment and strengthens the cocoa industry

The Virunga Foundation wanted to expand its cocoa roasting facility in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo near the Virunga National Park.

Challenges

  • no local processing: focus on export of local beans; economic value doesn't stay in the region
  • limited job opportunities: no stable employment, many locals rely on illegal or environmentally harmful activities
  • unreliable energy supply: weak infrastructure with frequent power outages and limited access to renewable energy sources
  • security risks: armed groups operating in the region

Solutions

Infrastructure & technology:

  • construction of a fully operational chocolate factory in Mutwanga, within the Parc Industriel Virunga

  • development of a custom-built machine in Belgium, shipped in containers and installed on-site

  • implementation of an electrical and mechanical automation system

  • internet connectivity enabling remote monitoring and maintenance

Sustainable energy:

  • solar panels on the factory roof, with battery storage for backup during power outages

  • hydropower: nearby sources provide the factory with a clean and stable energy supply

Local employment & training:

  •  selection and training of a dedicated team of local workers, primarily women from communities of former poachers and park rangers

  • leadership training in a cultural context where female instructors and technical experts required a careful and respectful approach

Security & logistics:

  • transportation of materials through Uganda with armed security escorting the convoy from the border to the site

  • a well-secured factory environment to secure the safety of workers and equipment

Koen Bosmans

CEO of CEE and passionate about sustainable energy

“This project for the Virunga Foundation means more to me than just a commercial engagement. This innovative chocolate factory is not only about delicious cocoa but also about creating sustainable jobs for the local community. My partnership with Dominique Persoone, a Belgian chocolatier, transformed the local cocoa into a premium product that can conquer the global market.”

Technical details:

  • continuous roasting system with 8 zones
  • roasting capacity: 100 kg/h
  • roasting temperature levels: 150 °C
  • roasting residence time: 1 h
  • the installation is fueled with 100% solar energy
  • energy storage system of 240kWh in no-maintenance battery rack
  • energy capture system of 40 kWhe PV panel system

Benefits for the Virunga Foundation and the local community

Local cocoa processing

  • Cocoa is now fully processed in the region, allowing farmers to receive higher and fairer crop prices.

Energy self-sufficient

  • The factory is fully operational and energy self-sufficient, using solar panels, battery storage, and hydropower as its primary energy sources.

Stable jobs

  • More than 100 local women now have stable jobs, freeing them from reliance on precarious or illegal income sources.

Autonomous operation

  • The factory runs autonomously, with remote-controlled technology ensuring efficient operations and minimal maintenance.

Direct export

  • The chocolate is exported directly, sharing Virunga’s story with the world.

Long-term impact

Fairtrade and economic growth

  • The local economy is strengthened as the entire cocoa-processing chain remains within the region.

  • Farmers have direct access to buyers, improving their income and living conditions.

Community empowerment

  • Women gain economic independence, positively influencing their families and society.
  • Young people now have legal job opportunities, reducing reliance on illegal activities.

Sustainable energy as a driver for progress

  • The success of the energy solutions in the factory serves as a model for other projects in Congo and beyond.
  • The region becomes less dependent on fossil fuels, benefiting from locally available renewable energy sources.

Improved security and stability

  • Economic opportunities reduce the risk of armed conflict.
  • The Virunga Foundation continues to invest in protecting the national park and its biodiversity.

This project demonstrates how technology, sustainability, and fair trade can work together to create not just a product, but also a stronger community and a brighter future.
